The Royal Society of Chemistry’s Bioorganic group acts to promote science at the interface of chemistry and biology mainly by organizing and sponsoring a large number of meetings such as ESBOC, Chemistry of the Cell, the Bioorganic Forum, Nucleic Acids at the Chemistry-Biology Interface, the yearly Postgraduate Meeting, and Directing Biosynthesis. The Gregynog Natural Products Symposia were initiated by Professor Cedric Hassall FRS in 1967.  He contributed significantly to the bioorganic area, including the area of peptide antibiotics and peptidomimetics, as well as to medical institutes in the UK.  He was also was the first professor of Chemistry at the University of the West Indies, Mona (photos), and head from 1947-1957.
